Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: Looking Beyond Standard Thyroid Labs

When most people think about thyroid problems, they think about abnormal thyroid lab results. Common thyroid tests include TSH, T4, and T3. While these markers provide valuable information about thyroid function, they don't always tell the whole story.

Many people experience symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, hair loss, anxiety, or cold intolerance despite having "normal" thyroid labs. In some cases, the missing piece may be Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland.

The Importance of Thyroid Antibodies

Traditional thyroid testing focuses on how well the thyroid is functioning. However, thyroid antibody testing helps determine whether the immune system is attacking the gland.

Two important markers include:

  • Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOAb)
  • Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TgAb)

Many individuals with Hashimoto's may have normal TSH, T4, and T3 levels while still having elevated thyroid antibodies and ongoing symptoms. This is why antibody testing can provide valuable insight that routine thyroid labs may miss.

Looking for the Root Cause

At Cornerstone Family Wellness, we believe it's important to look at the whole picture—not just at the hormones the thyroid produces but also at the immune response to the thyroid.

While autoimmune conditions affecting they thyroid can have many contributing factors, two of the most common root contributors we see are gut dysfunction and insulin resistance.

Gut Health

A large portion of the immune system resides within the digestive tract. When the intestinal lining becomes compromised—a condition often referred to as "leaky gut"—the immune system can become overstimulated, potentially contributing to autoimmune activity against the thyroid.

Insulin Resistance

Insulin resistance is another commonly overlooked factor. Elevated insulin levels can promote inflammation, disrupt hormonal balance, and contribute to immune system dysfunction, all of which may play a role in autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto's.

A Deeper Look at Thyroid Health

At Cornerstone Family Wellness, we go beyond routine thyroid testing by evaluating thyroid antibodies and looking for underlying contributors that may be driving the autoimmune process.

This often includes assessing:

Thyroid antibodies

Gut Health

Insunlin resistance and metabolic health

Inflammation

Livestyle factors that impact immune function

Feeling Stuck?

If you've been told that your thyroid labs are normal but you still don't feel like yourself, it may be time for a more comprehensive evaluation. At Cornerstone Family Wellness, we look beyond the standard thyroid panel to help uncover potential root causes that may be contributing to your symptoms.
